Non-Religious Funerals

A non-religious funeral is a best described as a "funeral without God" or humanist.    The content of the service will be free of religious texts, hymns and prayers.   As alternative the service may include tributes, poems, other readings, silence or other forms of personal expression.   A non-religious service offers a dignified alternative to the traditional funeral service and is made memorable by being personally tailored to each individual situation, with the wishes of the family taken fully into account.

A typical ceremony will include:

  • A welcome and a brief explanation of the ceremony

  • A 'tribute' to the deceased, mainly biographical, which may include short contributions from family, friends and colleagues
  • The Committal or words of farewell

The ceremony can also include any of the following:

  • Favourite or appropriate music (of any kind)

  • Poetry or prose readings
  • A time of reflection for silent meditation
  • Appropriate gestures of expression

  • A brief close, which can include thanks and announcements

A non-religious funeral ceremony may be conducted at a crematorium, public cemetery, or woodland burial ground.
